As MAEOE members are preparing to enjoy this year’s conference in Flint, MI, we are kicking off with a book discussion with Dr. Mona Hanna. What the Eyes Don’t See is Dr. Mona’s account of her discovery that Flint’s children were being poisoned by lead leaching into the city’s drinking water. 

Attendees hear from Dr. Mona about her thoughts and experiences as this tragedy unfolded in her city.  We will discuss not only the events that occurred but also strategies for understanding and augmenting resilience in our children and in ourselves.  We will also explore what can be learned from this tragedy and critical insights it can provide for the future.

This town hall will include Q & A throughout the discussion, so feel free to bring your questions for fellow readers or for Dr. Mona.

About Dr. Mona

Mona Hanna, MD, MPH, FAAP is a physician, scientist and activist who has been called to testify twice before the United States Congress, awarded the Freedom of Expression Courage Award by PEN America, and named one Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World. An associate professor of pediatrics and human development at Michigan State University, she is also the founder and director of the Michigan State University and Hurley Children’s Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative, a model program to mitigate the impact of the Flint water crisis so that all Flint children grow up healthy and strong.
