Description

Capture fish in the Flint River on UM-Flint's campus above and below the former site of a century-old dam as part of a long-term study. Participants can join in the fishing using the provided cast netting and other types of fishing gear. Participants will be able to handle and tag any fish we catch with assistance. We will have participants help collect, identify, and count benthic macroinvertebrates. We will use the data we collect and compare it to data collected before the dam removal and river restoration. Participants will walk as a group from the Conference Center to the fishing location, approximately 0.3 miles on flat, paved sidewalks. We will have tents available outdoors in case of rain and a pop-up shanty in case of cold. Sample sites will be accessible on foot, and some will require stairs. Seats are available at each location. General road noise will be present at each sampling site. Please reach out to conference@maeoe.com with any questions or accessibility requests. Location: North side of Flint River East of Harrison Street bridge, Flint, MI 48502 Time: Friday, October 2 from 8:30a.m. to 11:30a.m. Arrival and Transportation Details: Meet at Field Experience Location 3 at the UM-Flint Riverfront Conference Center (1 Riverfront Plaza, Flint, MI 48502) by 8:30a.m. The group will walk 0.3 miles together to the fishing site at 8:35a.m. and return to the Conference Center by 11:30a.m.
